Specialist
A Geographic Information System (GIS) is a computer
system capable of capturing, storing, analyzing, and displaying
geographically referenced information; that is, data identified
according to location. Environmental studies, agriculture, geography,
geology, planning, business marketing, and other disciplines have
benefited from GIS tools and methods. Together with cartography,
remote sensing, global positioning systems, photogrammetry, and
geography, GIS has evolved into a discipline with its own research
base known as geographic information sciences.
Using data integration, GIS can perform complex analysis of an area
by incorporating many types of information. The geographic information
specialist combines the functions of mapping science and surveying
into a broader field concerned with the collection and analysis
of geographic data.
