Association Representative

An association representative may represent one or many associations depending on the size and wealth of the membership. A large association may employ an association representative, maintain a large headquarters and a large staff of employees. Other association representatives may work from their home to keep down costs and represent one or more smaller organizations that cannot support a full time representative.

There is a lot o variation in what an association’s representative actually does. Most of it depends on the association the person works for – what they can afford and the services they desire. Basic duties require that the association’s representative maintain membership, recruit members, maintain financial records, take care of correspondence for the association, and plan meetings, workshops and conventions. Other duties that may be required include serving as a public relations person, lobbying for the association, maintaining an association website and list serve, publish newsletters and brochures, and provide consultation to the association officers. Association representatives may act as the voice of an organization by talking to the media and the public on the organization's behalf. They may handle all media relations and special events to enhance an organization’s image including writing press releases.
