SAE:

 Non-Game Wildlife Management

Description:

-Along with an increased interest in protecting our environment has been an increasing awareness of the importance of all wildlife, game and non-game wildlife. Observing wildlife is very enjoyable experience for many people. People in urban and rural areas can enjoy the presence of wildlife.

-Many people are becoming interested in attracting non-game wildlife, such as birds, to their property. Not only can they enjoy observing the wildlife, but they also know that they are helping to preserve and promote wildlife.

-Management of an area for non-game wildlife can be an excellent SAE for a person who enjoys the outdoors. The area to be managed may be on the student’s family property, on a neighbor’s property, public property, school property, or other areas. The key to managing a wildlife area for non-game wildlife is to provide habitat favorable to the wildlife, including food, water, and cover. Since different animals favor different types of cover to make their homes, specific animals could be targeted in managing the area. This project can include activities such as planting food plot, providing necessary cover for wildlife, building feeders, constructing rock piles, etc.

-Students may also assist younger students, elderly persons, or others in developing an area to attract wildlife. The experience gained in wildlife management could lead to a career as a wildlife biologist.
