| SAE: | Work at a veterinary clinic |
| Description: | |
|
Working in a veterinary clinic is an SAE that can be tailored to your
personal interests. The key to a productive educational experience
is the selection of a clinic in which to work. Several different
types of practices exist: large animal, large and small animal
combined, small animal, and specialty animal are a few. It is
critical that you get a position in a practice that deals with types
of animals that interest you and that personnel willing to work with
and teach you the necessary skills to be successful. Duties and
wages within the practice vary with the management. Some of the
tasks you might be expected to execute are: cleaning kennels,
pens, and cages, making medicine, daily caretaking chores, answering
the phone to schedule appointments, assisting with patients, taking
inventory and restocking supplies, cleaning the clinic, preparing samples
for research, and preparing observation instruments. A job in
a clinic is an excellent opportunity to explore your interests in veterinary
medicine but it also requires you to practice your customer service
skills.
