SAE: Temperature effects on Worms’ (Red Wigglers) food consumption
Description:

-        The purpose of this project is to determine if temperature effects the amount of garbage worms consume.

-        This project teaches the student both how to produce red wigglers and how to utilize some food waste produced in the lunchroom. Note: Do not use any meat scraps or bones only vegetables, tea bags or coffee grounds.

-        A suitable container is needed to grow worms in.  An old refrigerator will work or woodworking skills can be taught to construct a plywood box 2 feet deep, 2 feet wide, and 4 feet long.  Drain holes are necessary in the bottom to allow drainage.  Legs are needed to keep ants from entering the worm bed.

-        A commercial worm growing media can be procured or a mixture or cow manure, topsoil and sand can be mixed together using equal parts of each to form the media.  The box needs to be filled about three fourths of the way.  Old news papers can be shredded and put in the media as well. Do not use color print.

-        There are many suppliers of red wigglers or they can be dug and brought in to start the bed.  The box mentioned above will need about two pounds of worms to start.

-        Record the temperature and pounds of food material given each day to obtain data needed for the project.
